January Family Homework Project
Due: Wednesday, January 18th
This week, we read the story Snowballs by Lois Ehlert. In the story, children wait for a “perfect snowball day” to build a snowman using some things they had saved throughout the year. The illustrations are so creative and hopefully have sparked some ideas for your child's Snowman Project!
For our January Family Project, children will work with their families to create a paper snowman using various objects. They may want to make a snowdad, a snowmom, a baby snowman, a snowcat, etc. Will your snowman have a scarf, eyes, nose, mouth, ears, hat, arms, etc.? Your family gets to decide! Begin by helping your child cut out the attached snowman… and then get started!
What types of objects could your family use? How about seeds, popcorn, raisins, peanuts, kernels of corn, ribbons, string, buttons, bottle caps, plastic forks, sticks, jewelry, etc. Whatever you find!
Have fun and stay warm!

Holiday Writing
The students in Mrs. Sawyer's homeroom are working on their holiday writing paper. The notes and outline are due this Friday. Next week we will be writing the rough draft and then our final draft. We are doing this paper in preparation for our black history project starting after MLK day and into the month of February.
As the students are writing their outlines they will need to use topic sentences just like in their photo essay they did with Mrs. Henley in the fall. Some examples are:
This paragraph will be about....
You are about to learn about......
I will now teach you.....

Penny Timeline Project
For social studies the students will be making a penny timeline in class. In order to get ready for this project there has to be some preparation done at home.
- The students need to collect a penny for each year they have been alive. For example if your child was born in 2002, then they would need a penny for 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. So every child will need to go on a penny scavenger hunt, which should be FUN!!
- Each student needs to fill out the attached sheet with an event that happened each year of their life. So the first box would be the year they were born (I will still use the example above), so if your child was born in 2002, what happened at 0 years of age, probably they were born. Then in 2003 at 1 year of age they walked. Next in 2004 at the age of 2 they were talking. And this would continue. The more details the better. They cannot put I turned 2, I turned 3. That will not be accepted.
- Then in class we will be putting together our time lines using art work, pennies and all the exciting things that have happened in their lives.
- The pennies are due Friday, October 8, 2010. The pennies coming to school on time is part of the grade. The pennies need to be in an envelope or plastic bag with the students name on it.
- If you have extra pennies from the years of 2000-2010 and would like to contribute them to the class for any students who might need them, please feel free to send them.
Thanks,
Jamie Sawyer
